Try the Dark Meat... It's Extra Moist...

After visiting the doggy dermatologist this week, Daisy has to go on a kangaroo and oatmeal diet.

I wish I was making this up.

We're trying to combat her recurring itchy belly rash, hence the diet changes. We're treating it like an allergy for now. This is how dogs have allergic reactions.

There are no other animals in the house. We have hardwood floors. We change her bedding on a regular basis. We keep everything pretty clean. So diet is the next thing to try changing.

She's had 3 or 4 courses of antibiotics to clear her rash up in the last year and it keeps coming back six weeks later.

Also - no people food for Daisy Dog. No treats. Nothing.

She's really going to miss peanut butter and rawhide.

Hi. I had a dog that always had skin issues -- he would get these nasty weeping rashes all over. We tried all sorts of stuff with little effect. Finally our vet recommended 3V Caps and it worked wonderfully! His skin healed, his coat was beautiful, and most importantly he was happy (plus he loved the taste). We used the pump bottle, but it also comes in gelcaps. If you haven't tried this or something like it, it might be worth asking your vet about. Here's a link for more info: 3V Caps

Good luck!

"This is how dogs have allergic reactions." By sucking all of the money out of your bank account.

Daisy's actually done the 3V caps. It made her fur soft and shiny, but didn't really help the red bump issue. We also tried the benadryl route, but that only slowed down the itching; it didn't clear anything up. Sprays haven't worked either. The only thing that's worked is the antibiotics, but as soon as she finishes the course, the rash comes back.

We switched her over from ProPlan Chicken and Rice (which she had been eating since she was a puppy) to Nutro Lamb and Rice a few weeks back. She started regrowing her belly fur, but still had itchy scabs in her armpits. The dermatologist said that we may have hit on the right combination, but she wanted us to do the full-on elimination trial (featuring kangaroo) to be sure.

Her new kangaroo food has the fish oil in it, and so far she seems to be itching less frequently.

Thanks for your suggestion, though!

Poor doggie. :( I hope this new diet works or at least provides some answers. Sounds as if you've been through the wringer trying to figure out this problem.

And poor you -- literally! As a fellow pet owner I understand the "By sucking all of the money out of your bank account" bit very well. I have a cat, Alex, who had a urinary tract blockage just after Christmas. Of course it happened at night so I had to take him to the emergency vet where they told me "treatment will cost 2-3 times what it would cost at your regular vet." Just what I needed right after Christmas. Now I tell Alex "it's a good thing I like you, because your kitty plumbing must be made of solid gold." :-)

My dogs always had itchy skin until we started adding a raw egg to the kibble. The other option was to add a few tablespoons of oil to the food. Once we started doing that the coats got softer and shinier and no more skin problems.

PS - it is a lot cheaper this way also
